It's Vegetable Week

This week Connor and I have been learning about vegetables and how they grow. I have been teaching him that seeds need soil, sunlight, and water to grow. We went to the library and picked out some books about vegetables. We chose Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert, The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin and Up, Down, and Around by Katherine Ayres. The first book taught us how to plant, grow and harvest a vegetable garden. The book also taught us how to use the vegetables to make soup. The second book taught us that gardens can be very different. In this book, a mom and her daughter planted Chinese vegetables that looked very different from their neighbors gardens. After they harvested all their vegetables, the mom made a tasty soup that she shared with all the neighbors. And the third book taught us how vegetables grow. Some grow up (corn), some grown down (potatoes) and some grow all around (pumpkins). All three books have taught us about vegetables and how to grow them. This Friday we will be making our own vegetable soup with vegetables from Fred Meyers, of course!

Connor and I decided to plant our own vegetables so we can eat them at the end of summer. We planted carrots, basil, peas, and onions. Connor enjoyed placing the seeds in the soil and covering them up. He also enjoyed watering them and me! We also started a journal to chart the growth of the vegetables. He is curious to see which one comes up first.
